It’s hard to believe that we’re midway through January. It feels like I made my New Year’s resolutions ages ago. One of them was to post every Tuesday and Thursday on this blog. (So far, so good on that one.)
How about you? Did you make any resolutions related to your law practice? If so, how are they going?
To be honest, I typically don’t make resolutions. Rather than resolutions, I follow Chris Brogan’s “3 words” concept. The first time I heard about the 3 Words Concept was in January, 2013. A bunch of people I follow on Twitter were talking about their words and I was intrigued.
The 3 words idea is simple. You identify 3 words that serve as themes for the upcoming year. These words are supposed to “sum up what you want to work actionably on changing/improving in the coming year.” According to Chris Brogan, choosing 3 words to focus on helps you look at the bigger story.
“The big story is that which we want to believe about our life and our goals and our plan…Goals are a way of knowing that you’re headed in the direction of your…story.”
How often do you think about your story? The story we tell ourselves impacts our lives and work in profound ways. It’s important to take time to direct your thoughts and focus on those themes with the greatest value.
What’s really cool is that everyone’s words are different because our stories are unique. My 3 words for 2015 are:
1. Responsibility.
2. Voice.
3. Courage.
I challenge you to try this exercise. Let me know what your 3 words are in the comments below.
